When Chris Riddell was crowned children’s laureate in June he began his campaign to get everyone drawing and doodling every day. To inspire us Chris has been publishing his daily drawings on his laureate log, and here he shares some of the highlights including meetings with Wise Wizard Gaiman – and drawing on the walls of libraries and bookshops

It begins. Chris Riddell, the night before he was crowned children’s laureate as he was interviewed by the Guardian children’s books site editor Michelle Pauli. Chris decided to publish at least one drawing a day on his laureate log. What follows here is Chris’s selection of highlights – and his campaign for daily doodlings by everyone. So if you haven’t already, why not get started on your daily drawings today? All you need is a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. Hopefully this gallery will inspire you to great doodling!
Chris Riddell: Never say you cannot draw. Get a sketchbook and fill it up with drawings and notes and shopping lists. You can draw in your own way and it’s personal to you. It teaches you how to think visually. We can think in all sorts of ways but it is important to think of ideas as visual things – we can draw a problem and a landscape of ideas around it. Everyone can draw and what I want to talk about as laureate is promoting drawing. Everyone can draw so let’s all get sketchbooks and draw in them every day.
